BYD Sealion 08 Debuts: New Flagship EV Offers 900km Range and 9-Minute Charging

Byd has officially launched its all-new premium model, the all-electric BYD Sealion 08 SUV, a clear indication of its standing as an absolute powerhouse in the battery technology and automotive sector. The full sized luxury car has an incredible driving range of up to 900 kilometers on a single charge, and is a direct competitor to the traditional market for European luxury brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The launch of the Sealion 08, along with its flagship sedan sister, the Seal 08, isn’t about simply adding more high-end variants to existing mass market models, it represents a major strategic upscale move by BYD premium Ocean Series. The vehicle’s hyper-extended range of capabilities is complemented by an unprecedented level of electrical architecture to solve the two greatest challenges to mainstream EV adoption: Range Anxiety and Long Queues at charging stations. The car is the state of the art in mass produced battery electric vehicle (BEV) engineering for fleet operators, tech enthusiasts and luxury buyers alike.

Engineering Tricks to the 900km Range: Next-Gen Blade Battery Integration

To get to 900 km in “normal” test conditions, aspects of battery chemistry, thermal optimization, and structural vehicle architecture need to be reconsidered. The long-range model of the BYD Sealion 08 achieves this with an internal lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack which is large 115.072 kWh to 130.5 kWh. The specific iteration features the company’s much-anticipated second-generation Blade Battery technology, which is designed to maximize cell-to-pack (CTP) space efficiency, and packing more energy in a smaller space.

But for such a big energy cell there are engineering compromises that are important to note and reflect the state of LFP chemistry today:

  • Great Battery Pack Weight: The 115 kWh battery pack itself weighs an amazing 810.5 kilograms of the total 2,595 kg curb weight of the vehicle, which is approximately 31.2%.
  • Energy Density Realities: LFP cells are much safer, more stable and less susceptible to thermal degradation than nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells, but they have less energy density, and the engineers will have to squeeze every single ounce of aerodynamic efficiency out of the chassis to maintain long-range parameters.
  • Aerodynamic Optimization: The Sealion 08 massive curb weight is offset by a sweeping, ultra-smooth fastback profile, gently curved body sides, flush door handles and active grille shutters, which bring the drag coefficient to its best-in-segment levels.

It is important to highlight that the headline 900km was recorded in the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). The CLTC index is typically more benevolent than the Western Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), and the real-world range of the Sealion 08 comfortably surpasses 700 kilometers on a single charge, from mixed highway and urban driving, compared to nearly all high-end EVs on the global market.

Ultra-Fast Flash Charging: 10% to 97% in Less than 10 minutes.

If a battery pack is large, then it needs to be charged fast. The Sealion 08 high-voltage electrical architecture of 800V is revolutionary, allowing drivers to quickly charge the battery to 80% capacity in just 10 minutes.Recognizing that drivers have no desire to spend hours at highway rest stops, BYD has fitted this model of the Sealion with a revolutionary 800V high-voltage electrical architecture that facilitates lightning quick 80% charge in mere 10 minutes. The vehicle can go through an energy cycle from 10% to 97% capacity in as short as nine minutes in optimum conditions. This amounts to approximately 400km of driving range being added in a few minutes when speeding up a highway.

Moreover, this innovative design offers greater environmental resilience. During freezing winter weather (when charging speeds for EVs can drop significantly due to lithium ion immobility), the Sealion 08 internal pre-heating system maintains its EV maximum efficiency. Under the most severe cold-weather conditions, the software protocol provides for a maximum of a 3-minute charging time extension. The infrastructure reduces charging delays, enabling seamless cross-country travel, especially with the help of modern charging networks powered by high charging.

Performance, Dimensions, and Luxury Cabin Equipment

Built on a spacious 3030mm wheelbase, the Sealion 08 is a big family cross over that measures a length of 5115mm, a width of 1999mm and a height of 1800mm. The footprint is also much bigger than many conventional mid-size versions and BYD can design the interior to be a truly large, luxury executive-level three row, six seat design with no compromise on executive passenger comfort.

Its exterior design is very aggressive and the full-width “tide gradient” tail-light motif is also very striking, covering almost two meters of the vehicle, and the powertrain does not disappoint:

  • The Flagship Dual-Motor AWD Trim: Front and rear electric motors producing a huge combined effort of 644 horsepower (480 kW to 585 kW) propel the massive SUV to a brisk 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
  • The Long-Range RWD trim: The trim’s rear axle motor is one high-efficient 370 kW (496 hp) motor, delivering maximum energy-saving and achieving the maximum 900 km range target.
  • DiSus-A Intelligent Suspension: The chassis is equipped with a dual-chamber air suspension system that adjusts the ride height in real time in response to road conditions for better aerodynamics at high speeds and improved stability in corners.

Internally, it’s clear that it’s an upscale luxury cab. The center-piece of the dashboard is a large infotainment touchscreen that will be floating and can rotate to view the instrument panel, while its superior augmented-reality head-up display (AR-HUD) features the latest BYD operating system. True leather bonded executive seating boasts independent heating, ventilation and multi-point massage functions. The most advanced variants include a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor array as standard equipment, which feeds the advanced driver assistance system DiPilot 5.0 with the data of the space in front of the car in real time to control autonomous highway cruising, lane changes and precision automated parking.


Fracturing the Premium Global EV Market

The Sealion 08 is a positive message to the traditional luxury car industry. For years, top brands that carry the premium legacy brand names have been able to afford to charge more for their vehicles because they offer top-of-the-line suspension physics, luxury features and build quality. But by using the same interior conditions, and boosting charging speed by a factor of two and dramatically improving the range numbers, BYD is basically changing the rules of the high-end market.

This car will now roll out to key markets, becoming an important indicator of consumer willingness to buy luxury items from China. What BYD does is put itself in complete control of the entire production process, from manufacturing its own Blade Battery cells, second generation cells and electric motors to its own microchips, giving it huge production cost benefits which Western brands simply can’t close the gap on.
