The names of Pythagoras, Galileo and Al-Khwarizmi are well known in the history of ancient science; and they are from Eurocentric and Near Eastern cultures. But, a revolutionary archaeological discovery in Guatemala’s lush jungles has brought this story to a halt. Researchers have been able to identify the first named Maya mathematician-astronomer in historical writings, after deciphering a faint, thousand-year-old hieroglyphic inscription, and his name translates to Sak Tahn Waax, “White-chested Fox“.
The find at the ancient city of Xultun is an extraordinary one that brings an important advance to pre-Columbian history. The signatures of ancient Maya sculptors and painters have been previously identified, but the highly specialized astronomers, cosmologists and other scholars who formulated intricate calendars of the empire and complex cosmic cycles have always remained completely anonymous. Archaeologists have brought a human face to the advanced scientific practices of the ancients of the Americas by unearthing the physical body of “White-chested Fox”.
Secrets of Structure 10K-2: An Ancient Mathematical Workshop
The find was made in Structure 10K-2, a small rectangular room within the Xultun archaeological site, an immense ancient city that dates from about 250 to 900 CE. this chamber was first exposed and has long held the interest of researchers because of the vivid murals, red and black hieroglyphs and scribbled, faint calculations that cover its walls. This room was not a royal tomb or a ritual temple, but experts believe that it was a dynamic mathematics and astronomy workshop.
From the outside, the walls of the chamber appear to be a random assortment of graffiti. To epigraphers, however, it is the “old whiteboard” on which the Greeks solved complicated mathematical problems long before writing them on codices, the bark-paper books in which they did their work. With the help of state-of-the-art multispectral imaging and high-resolution digital scanning, researchers have recently found a key body of text in the inner wall, referred to as Text 19.
Epigraphers carefully studied the faded glyphs and were able to identify a very specific phrase: che-he-na (so says…/thus says…). Just after this phrase was the phonetic spelling SAK-TAHN-wa-xi which was used to spell out the name Sak Tahn Waax. The first time in Mesoamerican history, a complex scientific formula was coupled with the explicit signature of an ancient Maya scholar.
The “White-chested Fox” is a real fox?
The formula that is attributed to Sak Tahn Waax is a mathematical and astronomical marvel. The Maya were known for their dual calendar systems, and their intense interest in cosmic observation. But the equation, left by “White-chested Fox,” is entirely unique and not found in any other recovered Maya writings.
There are a number of planetary cycles that are elegantly incorporated into this calculation:
- The Cycles of Venus and Mars: The formula describes the synodic periods of the two neighbouring planets, their trajectories projected relative to each other.
- Temporal Commensuration: Aligns these planetary cycles with the intricate and layered cycles of the Mayan calendars.
- Predictive Application: This single mathematical system was probably used for forecasting celestial events, marking political ceremonies and comprehending changes in the agricultural seasons.
The sophistication of this mathematics is comparable to the extremely sophisticated calculations in the surviving Maya scientific book, the Dresden Codex, created hundreds of years after Xultun had been abandoned. The findings indicate that this sophisticated mathematics for predicting eclipses and planetary positions was not only being developed and discussed but also under the active consideration of individual academics within dedicated Mayan astronomical observatories.

Rewriting the Narrative of Indigenous Science
The discovery of Sak Tahn Waax does more than merely fill the history books, it calls into question the perception of Indigenous science within the modern world. Western academia has tended to look at the scientific accomplishments of the Maya in an aggregate ritualistic manner, or as religious matters, rather than as individual intellectual curiosity and systematic, scientific inquiry.
This discovery is a proof that individual scholars such as “White-chested Fox” were personally responsible for their mathematical findings, which puts the Maya (as individuals) on the map of the global history of scientific authorship. It reveals, it can be interpreted that the human desire to map out the universe, to discover mathematical patterns, to take intellectual property, is a universal characteristic, which first arose independently in both hemispheres.
The archaeologists are still mapping and recording the remaining faded paintings at Xultun, hoping that they will be able to discover additional names embedded in the plaster. Until recently, Sak Tahn Waax remained a solitary, monumental figure a bridge between the contemporary scientists and the ancient, brilliant minds that charted the stars from the heart of the Guatemalan jungle and found science alive and well in the Americas long before the Old World.
Codex Workshop: The Daily Life of Maya Scribes
More than 50 “microtexts” abbreviated, scribbled columns of numbers and dates that document mathematical rough drafts are in the room. These markings are akin to finding the personal blackboard, or work notes, of a historical genius. This demonstrates that the Maya did not simply write down static calculations, but had been actively debating, correcting and refining their predictive calendars on these walls.
The final phrase of the text is che-he-na (“thus says…”), followed by the phonetically written glyphs SAK-TAHN-wa-xi.
